Otago Individual tutoring

Weekly Group tutoring

Group tutorials are an excellent way to advance your legal skills in a supportive environment. We carefully focus on legal analysis and writing while also covering all the key content for tests, essays and exams. Our tutors advise the group on study and revision practices and help students develop exam skills. Given the schedule of most law students, we have designed the program to occur online and be recorded so that in the event a student needs to skip one or more tutorials, they will be able to catch up by watching the recording online on our website. The group environment allows students to collaborate and work together while solving complex legal problems, all with the support and guidance of our A+ tutors. By the end of the LAWS 101 paper, we expect students to have a thorough understanding of the legal doctrines covered as well as how to apply this knowledge in an assessment.

Success Mentor

Your Success Mentor is a dedicated senior student who acts in a supporting capacity, offering pastoral care during your first year law journey. This mentor will catch up with you each month, and will ask about your legal studies, your law tutoring with Momentum, as well as your conjoint degree and anything else that comes up. The goal of the Success Mentor is to have a supporter who is there for you through the entire year – not just through your law papers. By providing each of our students pastoral care, we aim to nurture the ‘entire student’, rather than just focus on the law subjects. Being a senior student, the Success Mentor has an understanding of university policies and procedures and can help students navigate the university system efficently.

Mock Assessments

Students who participate in the individual tutoring program will get the chance to sit mock assessments. These assessments are designed to test the skills required for the actual assessment or exam and give students the opportunity to evaluate not only their knowledge, but also their exam skills and organisation. Because law is skills-based, the best way to assess you progress and identify where you should focus your studying and revision is to sit an actual practice exam. The opportunity to practice their skills in an exam environment gives students a real advantage and allows them to use there study hours the most effectively.

Crash courses

Prior to significant assessments such as tests, essays, and exams, we hold intensive content-based crash courses. While the core of law school is skills-based, law exams often require a fusion of content knowledge and the application of legal skills. Our crash courses as designed to be the ultimate revision tool. They will draw your attention to all the key facts and cases you’ll need to know to answer each part of the exam, and provide an opportunity to ask any questions about the content before the exam.

Eligibility to enter second year tutoring program

Our second year tutoring program is nearly identical to that in the first, with a similar number of hours and focus on writing feedback. We restrict entry to the second year program to students who have worked with us in the first year. This makes it easier for us to advise law firms about the personality, drive and ambition of our students. Those law firms in turn offer internships to our students at the end of the second year, and this can lead to a formal summer clerkship and eventually a graduate job offer.

Internship program

Students who complete both years of tutoring with us become eligible to participate in an internship at a law firm in Auckland in the summer after their second year. By spending over 200 hours with students, we gain critical insights on their motivation, ambition and career aspiration and these insights are very valuable to our law firm partners. At the end of second year, students will be invited to complete an internship at one of our law firm partners in Auckland, for 1, 2, or 3 weeks.

Eligibility: Students who have completed the Individual Tutoring program with Momentum in their first year
Admission Cap: 4 students per university per year
